The 7 Fall Shoes That Make Jeans Look Expensive

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about getting dressed in my 40s, it’s that the shoes can completely change an outfit.

Especially when you’re wearing jeans.

The right pair can make a simple sweater and jeans look polished, intentional, and a little more expensive. The wrong pair can make the exact same outfit feel…well, unfinished.

And you don’t need a closet full of shoes to get it right.

For fall, these are the seven styles I keep coming back to when I want my jeans to look effortlessly chic.

Loafers

There’s a reason loafers never really go away.

They’re one of the easiest ways to make jeans feel more polished without making the outfit feel too dressed up.

I love the combination of relaxed denim, a simple sweater, and a classic loafer. It has that effortless European feel that looks like you didn’t try too hard—even though the outfit works.

Try them with: straight-leg or wide-leg jeans, a cashmere or knit sweater, and a structured bag.

The trick: Let a little ankle show if your jeans are cropped. It keeps the look from feeling heavy.

Clogs

Clogs are having a major moment, and honestly, I’m here for it.

They’re comfortable, slightly unexpected, and give even the simplest jeans-and-sweater outfit some personality.

A pair of wooden-soled clogs with straight-leg denim feels particularly good for fall. Add a barn jacket or oversized cardigan and you have an outfit that feels current without looking overly trendy.

Try them with: straight-leg jeans, a chunky sweater, and a barn jacket.

The trick: Keep the rest of the outfit simple. Let the shoes be the interesting part.

Clogs and a coffee…yes please.

Retro Running Sneakers

This is probably my favorite way to make jeans feel modern without sacrificing comfort.

Think retro running sneakers with a slightly vintage shape—not the super-minimal white sneaker you’ve seen everywhere for the last few years.

They look especially good with relaxed denim and give a chill vibe.

Try them with: wide-leg or relaxed straight jeans, a fitted sweater, and a denim or utility jacket.

The trick: Choose a sneaker with some visual interest. Suede, mesh, cream, brown, gray, or subtle color combinations can make the outfit feel much more elevated.

Chelsea Boots

If you want one pair of shoes that will carry you through fall year after year, this is it.

Chelsea boots work with almost every style of denim and instantly make an outfit feel more pulled together.

They’re especially good when the weather starts getting colder and sneakers just don't feel quite right anymore.

Try them with: straight-leg jeans, an oversized sweater, and a wool coat.

The trick: A slightly streamlined Chelsea boot works beautifully with denim. You don't need a huge platform or an overly chunky sole. Although, I do love a chunky sole.

Pointed-Toe Ankle Boots

This is the shoe I reach for when I want my jeans to look a little more sophisticated.

A pointed toe creates a longer, cleaner line underneath denim, which is especially flattering with straight-leg or slightly cropped jeans.

And you don't have to wear heels.

A low block heel or kitten heel gives you the same polished effect while still being completely wearable.

Try them with: straight-leg jeans, a fitted knit, and a long wool coat.

The trick: Let the hem of your jeans hit right around the top of the boot rather than bunching up over it. Too long looks sloppy.

Ballet Flats or Mary Janes

I love the contrast of feminine shoes with casual denim.

A simple ballet flat can make jeans feel softer and more feminine, while a Mary Jane gives the outfit a little more personality.

This combination is particularly good if you're tired of feeling like every casual outfit has to involve sneakers. This is just a tiny bit elevated.

Try them with: straight-leg or ankle-length jeans, a cardigan, and a simple belt.

The trick: Keep the denim relatively clean and streamlined. The simpler the jeans, the more intentional the shoes look.

The Cool-Girl Sneaker

And then there’s the sneaker you buy simply because you love it.

Maybe it's an Adidas Tokyo. Maybe it's an Onitsuka Tiger. Maybe it's a vintage-inspired sneaker in an unexpected color. A statement colour sneaker is just about my favourite thing.

You don't need every piece of your outfit to be timeless. Sometimes one slightly unexpected piece is what makes a basic jeans-and-sweater combination feel like your outfit.

Try them with: barrel leg jeans, a simple sweater, and a denim or suede jacket.

The trick: Don't overthink it. If the shoes make you happy, build the outfit around them.

Shoes really do make the outfit.

My Fall Formula

If you want the easiest possible formula this season, start here:

Wide-leg jeans + loafers + simple sweater

Straight-leg jeans + clogs + barn jacket

Relaxed jeans + retro sneakers + oversized knit

Straight-leg jeans + Chelsea boots + wool coat

Cropped jeans + ballet flats + cardigan

Simple. Comfortable. A little elevated. And a little fun.

And very much the kind of style I want to wear in my 40s.
