Perfect Pairings: 8 Fall Sweaters & Tops to Wear With Your Favorite Shoes
Fall is my favorite time of year.
It has all the things: cooler weather, pumpkin spice, apple-cinnamon-scented everything, warm soups, cozy nights—and, of course, the clothes.
Sweaters, boots, long pants, vests… all the good stuff.
And the best part? You get all of that cozy fall feeling without all the bulk of winter.
This is the time of year when getting dressed is actually fun. You can layer a sweater over your favorite jeans, pull on a great pair of boots, add a vest or jacket, and suddenly you look completely put together without having to try too hard.
That's what I love about fall style: comfort and fashion can actually coexist.
For this edition of Perfect Pairings, I'm putting together eight easy fall combinations built around one of my favorite parts of an outfit: the shoes.
Because the right shoe can completely change the feel of a simple sweater-and-jeans outfit.
Some days call for boots. Some days call for sneakers. And some days, you just want to put on a great pair of loafers or clogs and go.
Here are eight combinations I'm loving for fall.
Chunky Sweater + Chelsea Boots
Let's start with the classic.
A cozy, chunky sweater with straight-leg jeans and chelsea boot is basically the uniform of fall—and I'm perfectly happy with that.
I love this combination in warm neutrals like cream, camel, oatmeal, chocolate brown, and charcoal. Add a chelsea boot and a simple leather bag, and you've got an outfit that looks polished without feeling fussy.
The perfect pairing: A slightly oversized sweater + straight-leg jeans + chelsea boots.
Why it works: The sweater gives you that cozy fall feeling, while the boots make the whole outfit feel pulled together.
And most importantly, you can actually walk around in it.
Oversized Sweater + Fashion Sneakers
Fall doesn't mean you have to put away your sneakers.
In fact, I think a great fashion sneaker is one of the easiest ways to make a cozy sweater outfit feel more modern.
Try an oversized sweater with relaxed or wide-leg denim and a retro-inspired sneaker. Adidas, New Balance, Veja, and similar styles work beautifully here.
This is one of those outfits that looks effortless—but in a very intentional way.
The perfect pairing: Oversized sweater + relaxed denim + fashion sneakers.
Why it works: The sneaker keeps the sweater from feeling too traditional and gives the whole outfit a casual, current feel.
And let's be honest: comfort doesn't get much better than this.
Cardigan + Loafers
There is something about a cardigan and loafers that just feels polished.
Try wearing your cardigan buttoned up as a top instead of layering it over a shirt. Add straight-leg jeans and a classic loafer, and you've got an easy outfit that works for lunch, shopping, traveling, or pretty much anywhere else your day takes you.
Black loafers are classic, but fall is also the perfect time to try chocolate brown, cognac, or burgundy.
The perfect pairing: Soft cardigan + straight-leg jeans + loafers.
Why it works: The cardigan keeps things soft and comfortable while the loafers add just enough structure.
It's casual, but definitely not sloppy.
Fitted Sweater + Clogs
Clogs are having a moment, and I am completely on board.
They're comfortable, practical, and just different enough to make a simple outfit feel interesting.
Because clogs tend to have a little more visual weight, I like pairing them with a simpler fitted or semi-fitted sweater. Add straight-leg jeans and you've got an easy fall outfit that feels current without chasing a trend.
The perfect pairing: Ribbed sweater + straight-leg jeans + clogs.
Why it works: The fitted sweater balances the chunkier shoe.
And clogs are one of those shoes that can take a very basic outfit and make it feel like you actually thought about what you were wearing.
Striped Sweater + Knee-High Boots+Socks
A striped sweater is one of those pieces I will never get tired of.
Especially in the fall.
Pair a classic navy-and-cream or black-and-cream striped sweater with a cute skirt, knee boot socks, and knee-high boots for an outfit that feels timeless but still completely wearable today.
Add a leather tote and simple jewelry and you're done.
The perfect pairing: Striped sweater + skirt + knee-high boots.
Why it works: It's classic, easy, a perfect combo.
Button-Down + Fashion Sneakers
Not every fall outfit needs a heavy sweater.
A classic button-down is one of my favorite transitional pieces, especially when paired with jeans and fashion sneakers.
Try a crisp white or pale blue shirt with relaxed denim and a retro sneaker. When it gets chilly, throw a sweater over your shoulders or add a lightweight jacket.
The perfect pairing: Button-down + relaxed denim + fashion sneakers.
Why it works: The button-down adds a little polish while the sneakers keep it comfortable and casual.
It's the kind of outfit that works just as well for running errands as it does for a casual lunch.
Sweater Vest + Loafers
If you want to make your everyday jeans feel a little more interesting, try a sweater vest.
Layer one over a long sleeve tee, add straight-leg jeans (I love an ankle jean with loafers), and finish it with loafers.
I love this look in neutral colors—cream, camel, gray, navy, and chocolate brown. It has that slightly preppy, slightly European feeling without being overly dressed.
The perfect pairing: Sweater vest + long sleeve tee + straight-leg jeans + loafers.
Why it works: You're getting the warmth and texture of a sweater without the bulk of a full sweater.
And that's exactly what I love about fall dressing.
Mock-Neck Sweater + Western-Inspired Boots
A mock-neck sweater is one of those fall pieces that gives you a little extra warmth without the bulk of a turtleneck. Pair it with straight-leg or a skirt and a simple Western-inspired boot for an outfit that feels current but still incredibly easy to wear.
The perfect pairing: Mock neck + Skirt + Western-inspired boots.
Why it works: The outfit stays simple while the boots do the talking.
It's comfortable, easy, and just a little bit unexpected.
The Perfect Fall Outfit Starts With the Shoes
One of my favorite things about fall dressing is that you really don't need a huge wardrobe.
You need a few great sweaters. A couple of pairs of jeans. Maybe a vest or two. And good shoes.
Then you can mix and match everything depending on where you're going and how comfortable you want to be.
Sometimes the shoes are the starting point.
Sneakers when I know I'll be walking.
Loafers when I want something a little more polished.
Clogs when I want comfortable with a little personality.
Boots when I want that unmistakable fall feeling.
That's really what I'm looking for when I get dressed these days: pieces that are comfortable enough to actually live in, but fashionable enough that I feel good wearing them.
Because at this point, I'm not interested in choosing between comfort and style.
I want both.
And fall makes that pretty easy.
