The Ultimate Packing Guide to New Zealand for Women +40
New Zealand is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world. With dramatic landscapes, charming towns, and unforgettable outdoor experiences, it’s ideal for women who want adventure without chaos.
On my first trip, I went from sunshine to wind to rain—all in the same day. Especially on the South Island, layering is everything.
This packing guide is designed specifically for women 40+ who want to feel: comfortable, put together, and prepared (without overpacking)
These are the exact pieces I rely on to stay stylish and ready for anything.
(Essentials you’ll actually wear)
Lightweight Waterproof Jacket.
New Zealand rain comes out of nowhere—this is non-negotiable. Look for one that is breathable, packable and slightly fitted so you feel cute for photos.
(I always keep mine in my day bag)
You will walk more than you expect—between towns, viewpoint, and spontaneous stops.
Choose sneakers that are: supportive, neutral (so they match everything), easy to slip off and on. Make sure they are broken in well before the trip.
Perfect for: travel days, casual dinners, cooler evenings. Make sure you love your jeans!
A Soft Layering Cardigan/hoodie
This is one of my most-worn pieces when traveling. It’s perfect for: chilly mornings, layering under a jacket, making basic outfits feel pulled together.
You will want extra space on the way home.
A foldable bag is perfect for: souvenirs, laundry, or using it as a carry-on.
Even if you’re not “hiking,” you’ll want something extra comfortable for: scenic walks, long drives, active days. This is also a good spot to pack anti chaff guard. Because…you know…thighs.
Especially useful for the fjord tours on the South Island.
Keep it simple when packing…don’t overthink it. I stick to 4-5 tops, 3 bottoms, 1 jacket, 2 pair of shoes. If you don’t wear it at home, you won’t wear it there.
I may earn a small commission if you purchase thru my links—at no additional cost to you. I only share pieces I love and use.
