The Ultimate 5-Day Southern Road Trip: Atlanta, Charleston, Hilton Head & Savannah

If you've been dreaming about charming streets lined with Spanish moss, historic homes, beautiful beaches, and endless Southern charm, this 5-day road trip is one of the best girls' getaways in the United States.

Starting and ending in Atlanta, this itinerary takes you through some of the South's most iconic destinations, with a few hidden gems along the way. Expect cobblestone streets, waterfront walks, boutique shopping, and plenty of photo-worthy stops—all without feeling rushed.

Day 1: Atlanta to Charleston

Drive Time: About 5 hours

Leave Atlanta early and head east toward Charleston. The drive is easy, giving you plenty of time to settle into vacation mode.

Charleston is one of America's most beautiful cities, known for its colorful historic homes, horse-drawn carriages, hidden gardens, and waterfront parks.

Spend the afternoon wandering through the Historic District. Rainbow Row is one of the city's most photographed streets, while nearby Waterfront Park is perfect for relaxing beneath the famous pineapple fountain.

If shopping is on your agenda, King Street offers everything from local boutiques to designer stores.

Don't miss:

  • Rainbow Row

  • The Battery

  • Waterfront Park

  • King Street shopping

  • Historic churches and hidden gardens

Stay overnight in Charleston.

We went in the fall which was really beautiful weather. Pleasant in the day and cool in the evening. We missed the leaves turning, but that was ok. Im linking a few outfit ideas that I love.

Black Jeans, lightweight sweatshirt, easy tank, clogs, best socks

jeans, babydoll top, jean jacket (fits BIG), ballet flats

Day 2: Charleston → Beaufort → Hilton Head Island

Drive Time: Approximately 2.5 hours total

Before heading south, spend another relaxed morning exploring Charleston if you'd like.

Then begin the scenic drive toward Beaufort.

Stop in Beaufort

Beaufort is one of those towns people often drive past—but shouldn't.

Its peaceful waterfront, beautiful antebellum homes, and quiet streets make it feel like a smaller, less crowded version of Charleston.

Spend a couple of hours walking Bay Street, visiting the marina, and exploring the historic district beneath enormous live oaks draped in Spanish moss.

After Beaufort, continue another hour to Hilton Head Island.

Hilton Head offers a completely different pace. Rent bikes, relax on the beach, or simply enjoy the laid-back island atmosphere.

A couple outfit ideas for going in the fall, cooler evenings with warm days

Jean shorts, chunky sweater, sandals, gold necklace (this brand is THE best)

Barral jeans, white tee, red rain jacket

Day 3: Hilton Head to Savannah

Today's drive is short, giving you almost an entire day in Savannah.

Savannah feels wonderfully different from Charleston. The city is built around 22 beautiful public squares, each shaded by ancient oak trees dripping with Spanish moss.

It's incredibly walkable and perfect for a girls' trip.

Spend the day exploring:

  • Forsyth Park

  • Jones Street

  • River Street

  • Historic Squares

  • Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist

Take your time wandering through neighborhoods, browsing local shops, and soaking in the city's unmistakable Southern charm.

Day 4: Savannah → Macon → Atlanta

Drive Time: Around 5 hours total

Begin your journey back toward Atlanta, but break up the drive with a stop in Macon.

Macon often surprises visitors with its beautiful historic architecture and slower pace.

If you're visiting in spring, the city becomes famous for its blooming cherry blossoms, but it's worth visiting any time of year.

Floral Jeans, basic tank, clogs, bracelet stack

Day 5: Explore Atlanta

If your schedule allows, spend one final day exploring Atlanta before flying home.

Some favorites include:

  • Georgia Aquarium

  • Centennial Olympic Park

  • Ponce City Market

  • Atlanta BeltLine

  • Piedmont Park

It's the perfect way to end a week filled with history, coastal scenery, and unforgettable memories. We went toward the end of November. The weather was moody and perfect. There were some cute farmer markets set up. I LOVE going to anything local, it really helps you get the vibe for the area you're visiting.

I am also linking my favourite bags to pack, I only ever pack in a carry-on, and I always recommend that to my clients. You can fit way more than you think! Investing in quality luggage and bags is always worth it.
